Mount or Foden : Which star shines brightest?

Mason Mount or Phil Foden? This debate has been one of the most popular ones when talking about young English talents. Both the youngsters have had brilliant seasons, where Foden won the PL title and Carabao Cup whereas Mount won the Champions League. Even though the youngsters play in similar positions, their roles in the team aren’t exactly the same. Today, we will come to a verdict on which youngster is better.

Mason Mount : Chelsea’s Finest

Mason Mount has been one of the best and most consistent performers in this Chelsea side for the past two years. He has bagged a total of 11 goals and 7 assists for Chelsea across all competitions this season. This also includes a crucial assist in the Champions League final against Manchester City. Not to forget, he also scored a crucial freekick in the last gameweek in 19/20 to secure Champions League football for Chelsea. Offensively, Mason Mount averaged 2 SpG ( shots per game ), 2.1 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game. Even though Mount usually plays as an attacking midfielder, his defensive numbers are a huge plus considering the pressing system under Thomas Tuchel. He averages 1.8 tackles per game and 0.8 interceptions per 90.

Phil Foden : City’s Finest

Phil Foden has arguably been one of the best English talents this past year. He has secured 24 goal contributions for Manchester City this season which includes 16 goals and 8 assists. He also got 9 goals and 5 assists in 17 appearances in the Premier League out of which he came on from the bench for 11 of them. His contributions to City’s CL run were also crucial as he secured 6 g/a in the 12 games he played. Offensively, Foden averages 1.9 SpG, 1.3 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per 90. It is clear he outperforms his expected numbers in several aspects but has nonetheless been one of the best Man City players this season.

Mason Mount vs Phil Foden : Comparison

Now we go into more details and compare Foden’s and Mount’s in-depth statistics to come to a verdict. Now even though Foden has had slightly better numbers than Mount, Mount seems to be a much more versatile and all-around player. Foden has more carries into the box and successful dribbles, whereas Mount has more prog. carries and carries into the final third. Mason outperforms Foden in passes into the box, prog. passes into the final third and even shot-creating actions. Mount even puts up better defensive numbers than Foden. Maybe Mount’s base stats would’ve been much better if Tuchel was introduced at the start of the season. We also have to consider the fact Chelsea’s top scorer in the League was Jorginho with 7 penalty goals so Mount’s passes into the box and all those progressive passes weren’t given justice.

Considering all these ideologies and statistics, we have come to the verdict that even though both are the stars of England, Mount shines brighter.
