Has Timo Werner been a good signing for Chelsea?
Timo Werner : Player Analysis
It has almost been a year since Timo Werner signed for Chelsea from RB Leipzig, and there have definitely been some mixed opinions on his first season performances. In this short article, I'll be covering up on his strengths and weakness and come to a personal conclusion on Timo's Performances.
Strengths :
1) Statistics : Timo Werner has 29 goal contributions in his first year at Chelsea ( 18 goals, 11 assists ). He is the first Chelsea player to reach double figures in both goals and assists after Hazard. He has also stepped up for his side in the Champions League where he has 6 goal contributions in 9 games. Although, he does have more assists (8) than goals (6) in the premier league, which is a weird statistic to have for a striker.
2) Versatility : Timo Werner is not your average striker. Like Mbappé, He has also been deployed at all the three attacking positions ( LW, ST AND RW ) where he has genuinely played in the centre or on the left handside. Playing on the wing also reduces goal scoring pressure and he has perfromed much better when played from the left side.
3) Counter Threat : Werner is one of the faster players in the Chelsea lineup. He is a constant threat on the counters and usually ends up outpacing the opposition defenders. Although his offside awareness needs to be worked upon, his combination with attacking players of Chelsea makes up for it and he fits perfectly into Tuchel's system.
Weaknesses :
1) Finishing : Timo Werner has bottled up 18 big chances, out of which even if he had put half of them away, he would've been competing for Player of the Season. His confidence has taken a huge toll this season and he definitely needs to work on both of those things . The strange case is that I have seen him score goals in a match , which should ideally help boost his confidence, and then go on to miss big chances. Granted he was never the best finisher in the Bundesliga either but he has definitely underperformed in this department.
Verdict :
Has Timo Werner been a good finisher this season? No. Has Timo Werner been a good signing? Yes. His strengths outweigh his weaknesses and even though he hasn't been a great finisher this season, he has definitely been at the thick of all the good things at Chelsea. He has started over Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud as he provides much more than goals and is always a threat to the opposition. A so called out of form Werner got nearly 30 goal contributions, imagine what numbers a confident Werner would bag.
