Manchester City vs PSG game recap

Man City vs PSG CL Second Leg Recap

Manchester City vs PSG (2-0) was a spectacular game to watch (unless you support PSG). City finally broke their Champions League curse and reach the final. They were holding a 2-1 lead coming into this game. The strange thing is that PSG got off to a better start, but Man City reaped rewards. PSG certainly missed their superstar Kylian Mbappé, as even though they had 14 shots, none of them were on target. In this article, we’ll be discussing key performances, the man of the match and what PSG need to do to have a shot at the CL (in brief). To see how we expect City to finish their season click here.

Man City: Defence & Midfield

Manchester City players were absolutely exceptional tonight. Every player played their part in the victory and they were absolutely top-notch. Firstly, we have to appreciate that wonderful ball sent by Ederson. His pass was crucial to the build-up of the first goal. His distribution was as good as Kevin De Bruyne.  Even though the whole backline deserves credit, the CB partnership of Rúben Dias and John Stones was quite the brick wall. They didn’t let PSG create a clearcut chance throughout the game and played a massive role in keeping the clean sheet.

Moving onto the midfield, Fernandinho was lucky not to get carded due to the number of fouls he committed, maybe got away due to not arguing with the referee as much as other players but definitely got lucky. İlkay Gündoğan and Bernado Silva both did the job and were good performers apart from the minute mistakes every now and then.

Man City: Attack

Now let’s discuss the attackers who gave the PSG backline constant heart attacks. The Algerian GOAT (Riyad Mahrez) was extraordinary and he was definitely the man of the match. His two goals sealed the victory for City and put PSG to bed. Agreed they weren’t spectacular goals but City needs a player who steps in times and matches like these. If they now go on to win the Champions League, they might just be one of the few teams do it without a natural striker in the lineup.

Another outstanding performer was certainly Phil Foden, he was consistently toying around with the PSG defence and was a constant threat to Keylor Navas. His performance was awarded by an assist but he was definitely unlucky to not have registered a goal. Lastly, De Bruyne also had a great game and played some lovely through balls and also a key part in City’s success tonight.

PSG: What must be done?

PSG’s dreams of the CL collapse once again. Paris crash out of the semi-finals after being dominated by Manchester City. They got off to a great start where they were the ones asking the questions from the City backline. Unluckily, they couldn’t find the finishing touch and were soon punished by Man City when Ederson played a lovely ball and you know what happened next. Kylian Mbappe’s injury was a devastating hit to Paris, they couldn’t register a single shot on target and Di Maria’s miss from 25 yards in an open goal really came back to haunt them.

Temper also played a role in PSG’s collapse. Experienced players like Marco Verrati and Ander Herrera were carded for their petulant reactions. Ángel Di María got sent off for kicking Fernandinho, even when the ball was out of play. After this year’s results, it is unlikely that Kylian Mbappe will renew his contract. PSG may need to start looking for alternatives.

Unpopular opinion: The departure of Mbappe might just be a blessing in disguise. Obviously, the benefits wouldn’t be immediate and they will struggle initially, but they could really invest in the squad. They could improve their lineup in different areas such as the midfield and wingbacks. They will end up losing on a superstar but will gain a better team. The same goes for Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus. It might just be beneficial for both parties. Now, PSG need to bounce back and win Ligue 1 to end the season on a high.
